36' Schock New York

The New York 36 was conceived by members of the New York Yacht Club. It is an exceptional design formulated after months of brainstorming by an outstanding blend of people. These boats were built to strict one-design standards. This is a racer/cruiser that takes advantage of the technologies of hull construction rig design & deck layout. This boat was designed as a one design racer, but is still comfortable below. Would you expect any less from the members of the New York Yacht Club?

  • Year: 1981
  • Builder: Schock Designer: Cook

  • Dimensions:
  • LOA: 36' LWL: 29'
  • Beam: 11.8'
  • Displacement: 10,500 lb.
  • Draft: 6.5'
  • Bridge Clearance: 55'
  • Ballast: 4,200 lb. Lead

The interior layout satisfies the performance sailor, Chris, by placing the heaviest components near the boat’s center of gravity to minimize pitching. The interior is comfortable for cruising which was very important for Gill. The dinette is placed aft out of the main companionway, and the galley is well outfitted. There are two large double berths, one forward in a stateroom - the door is missing and one aft under the raised bridge deck section of the cockpit. Two additional bunks give the boat a total of six berths. Generous use of natural teak and wood paneling makes the interior warm and comfortable.

The Engine
The Engine
While the boat was in Mexico we had it painted dark blue, the deck refinished and all the cushions were replaced with heavy foam and a lovely blue Sunbrella fabric. The engine is the original Volvo Engine which has a cruising speed of 5 knots but we did not use it very much on our trip. We actually sailed almost all of the 461 nautical miles from Puerto Vallarta to La Paz as we are not used to inboard engines - it leaked water and oil and we trusted the sails far more!
The electronics need upgrading - the autopilot does work but we did not use it much as one of the two batteries was not working and we needed to keep the other to start the engine when necessary. There are two depth sounders which give readings which are very dissimilar on the few occasions that they worked! The two compasses do not have lights in them and since there are 13 hours of night in November they were very hard to read. The wind speed worked on our trip but by the time Serendipity arrived here in Nanaimo it had blown off. And the knot meter never did work. We have bought knot meter, depth sounder and wind speed so we will know where we are going.
